The journey toward disability justice may face delays, but the commitment to inclusion remains unwavering.
Aid for African Women & Girls (A2WG) remains committed to advancing inclusive governance and strengthening the protection of the rights of persons with disabilities in Adamawa State through sustained advocacy and stakeholder engagement.
As part of its ongoing follow-up efforts on the proposed Disability Rights Bill, A2WG staff recently undertook a strategic visit to engage key actors and gather updates on the current status of the document at the state level.
Last week, the Project Manager of the FEF-OSC 2025 project at A2WG coffers and the MEAL Officer met with the Chairman of JONAPWD, in person of Comrade Abdullahi Toungo, who provided an important update on the movement of the bill. According to him, the Governor had reviewed the document and directed that it be returned to the House Committee on People with Disabilities for further attention.
In a related development, Mr. John Gurgu of Aziralei Foundation, who is also a member of the disability stakeholders’ platform, shared additional information indicating that the document is currently with the Chief of Staff. He explained that the Governor is reportedly prioritizing ongoing developmental projects and intends to return to the matter afterwards.
While this may suggest a delay in immediate action, it also signals that the bill remains under consideration within government channels. Importantly, feedback received indicates that the document may be subject to further review, as some of the demands contained in it were described as not immediately feasible. This development highlights the reality of policy advocacy: progress is often gradual, requiring persistence, dialogue, and strategic engagement with decision-makers.
To further clarify the status of the document, A2WG also made efforts to meet with the Member of the Adamawa State House of Assembly representing Mayo-Belwa, who is responsible for issues relating to persons with disabilities. Although he was not available at the time of the visit, steps are currently being taken to secure an appointment through his Personal Assistant for a follow-up engagement.
This advocacy effort reflects A2WG’s broader commitment to ensuring that disability inclusion remains on the policy agenda in Adamawa State. The organization recognizes that the passage and implementation of disability rights legislation are critical steps toward promoting dignity, equal opportunity, accessibility, and protection for persons with disabilities.
A2WG understands that meaningful policy reform requires sustained engagement with government institutions, legislators, civil society actors, and disability rights stakeholders. For this reason, the organization will continue to follow up, build dialogue, and support every effort that moves the Disability Rights Bill closer to adoption.
At a time when inclusive development must be a priority, A2WG remains resolute in standing with persons with disabilities and their representative groups to advocate for laws and systems that leave no one behind.
The journey toward disability justice may face delays, but the commitment to inclusion remains unwavering.
